Abu Dhabi’s brightest young musicians have an opportunity to hone their talents as the British School Al Khubairat (BSAK) opens the renowned BSAK Music Scholars Programme for 2022/23.
Applications for the prestigious programme opened on Friday (22 April) and you have until 16 May to submit your application.
Auditions and interviews will then be held by invitation on 27 May to decide selection for the much sought-after places on Abu Dhabi’s only music programme that covers the full range of orchestral instruments.

Scholars will have the opportunity to showcase their music skills by taking the leading role in school ensembles as well as taking their place in one of the school choirs in order to improve their note and sight-reading ability.
And the results speak for themselves with three BSAK students being crowned winners of their category in the BSME Young Musician of the Gulf competition in 2020 and the Funky Brass Group reaching the final of the ensemble category, a BSAK student winning the plucked strings for the fourth consecutive year in 2021 and one third of the finalists of the Abu Dhabi Young Musician 2022 being made up scholars from the programme.
What are the criteria and assessment for the BSAK Music Scholar Programme?
The programme offers four categories; current year 4-6; current years 7-9; current years 10-11 and current sixth form. Each category will be tutored and graded to the equivalent to ABRSM/Trinity Grade system.
New to the 2022/23 programme is the introduction of a Talent Development Programme for those entering Year 5 to 9 and Scholar Awards for those entering Year 10 and above. All students applying, should submit their application before the required year of entry so a scholar applying for Year 5 should submit their interest in Year 4.
Outside candidates who receive an offer will be subject to satisfactory document checks, school reports and references, in line with BSAK’s General Admissions Policy.
What is the selection process of the BSAK Music Scholar Programme?
External applicants must submit an application form which includes an academic report and a reference from their current instrumental teacher alongside a five-minute video recording of a performance on their preferred instrument.
BSAK candidates taught by a music staff member only have to submit an application form, however, BSAK instruments receiving outside music tuition must provide a video recording together with their application.
Short-listed candidates will then be given an audition to perform on their chosen instrument as well as an interview with the Director of Music or Head of Secondary Academic Music.
Successful applicants who enroll on the Scholars’ Programme will be required to have their instrumental lessons exclusively with a member of the BSAK Instrumental team.
