Tell us a little bit about yourself

My name is Qadreya, I am Emirati, and I am the founder and CEO of Bumblebee Food.

How has growing up in Dubai shaped your identity today?

Dubai is my home; I believe that growing up in a city that went through so many changes has helped shape who I am. I am very lucky to have interacted with people from all around the world across all paths of life, their perspective and knowledge has given me a unique way of looking at things.

Can you share a pivotal moment or tradition that symbolises the essence of being born in the Emirates for you?

When you are born into an Emirati family, the Sheikh gives you a certificate to welcome you.

What is the biggest change in Dubai as you’ve grown up vs what it is today?

The biggest change is the availability of everything. Sure, we had many things before, but today we have everything. Whatever product or business you can think of it is available here. I watched my city develop into a beautiful and prosperous haven for everyone.

In what ways do you see the modernisation of Dubai impacting traditional values and lifestyles?

Dubai has become an international pot of different nationalities and religions. Everybody lives in peace and harmony because of the shared values, which is to be a positive force in this country. We had the year of tolerance which was endorsed by the government as well to promote tolerance and co-existence among all.  The Dubai government and its people have been welcoming of everyone, and perhaps the traditional values of being kind and hospitable allowed that.

What is your favourite thing about the emirate and why?

This city is the land of opportunity. Growing up I always heard about the American dream, but I would argue that Dubai is truly the land of opportunity as many businesses that were founded here became multimillion-dollar businesses, and even a few billion-dollar companies started here. Dubai offers equal opportunities for everyone; you just need to take it.

A myth about Dubai you would like to bust

A common myth is that Dubai’s success happened overnight when that is far from reality. The pedestal has been laid down by our founding fathers whose vision our country continues to work on. The UAE may be young in comparison with other countries, but its success is because of its visionary leaders and their active support of the people.
