5 MINUTES WITH: KATISHA, the immensely talented Dubai based sax player

KATISHA has performed at some of the Dubai’s most stunning venues and is releasing her own track in July

Tell us a bit about yourself

My name is KATISHA. I am a musician with a passion that has been burning since I was nine years old.

My journey in music began with the recorder, which I played for two years to develop my lung capacity. This foundation was essential as it prepared me for my true musical love—the saxophone.

A year ago, I embarked on a new chapter in my musical journey: composing my own music. In addition to writing music, I have also started singing and performing my original tracks at various venues across the UAE.

On July 19, I will release my latest track, ‘Stop the Time.’ This song represents a significant milestone in my career, and my team and I are preparing to shoot a music video for it.

How and when did you move here, and what inspired the move?

My journey to the United Arab Emirates began in 2019 with an invitation to Abu Dhabi from Saadiyat Beach Club. I spent three unforgettable months performing at beach club parties, immediately falling in love with the local vibe and audience.

After the pandemic, I returned to Abu Dhabi and decided to make it my home. Sometime later, I decided to move to Dubai, believing that the city offers even more opportunities for a musician’s growth and performances.

How has living in Dubai shaped your sense of belonging and community?

Since moving to Dubai, I have felt incredibly comfortable. I feel that I am in the right place and am more in demand here than I ever was in my native Russia.

One of the most remarkable aspects of my experience in Dubai has been the support from the government.

A month ago, I was honored to receive the Golden Talent Visa. This recognition has made me incredibly happy and grateful to the state for acknowledging my work.

Can you tell us about a particular person in Dubai who has had a significant impact on your life and why?

A significant influence on my life has been my partner. We met in Abu Dhabi on the third day after my arrival, and we’ve been in a relationship ever since.

He is the kindest person I’ve ever met. It was he who suggested that we move from Abu Dhabi to Dubai. His insight and support have been invaluable, guiding me through important decisions and changes.

Sometimes I wonder what life would have been like if I hadn’t met him, and I truly believe that it couldn’t be any better than it is now.

What is your favourite thing about the emirate and why?

Firstly, Dubai is an incredibly safe place, and that means a lot to me. Knowing that I can feel secure wherever I go is invaluable.

Secondly, Dubai is a place where you can get anything at any time. The service and delivery options here make life so comfortable and convenient. Lastly, the culture and beauty of the city are remarkable.

When I first arrived in Dubai, I felt butterflies in my stomach—I instantly fell in love with the city.

A myth about Dubai that you would like to bust?

Dubai is incredibly welcoming to animals, contrary to some misconceptions. It’s often said that renting a home with pets in Dubai is difficult, but in my experience, this isn’t true.

While some buildings do have restrictions against pets, there are many neighbourhoods where pets are more than welcome.

These pet-friendly areas are well-equipped with parks for walking, veterinary clinics, grooming salons, and pet stores.

So, if you’re considering moving to Dubai with your pets, you’ll find plenty of accommodating places to make both you and your pets feel right at home.

Could you share a memorable moment when you felt the genuine warmth and hospitality of the Dubai community in your own life?

This memorable experience was during Ramadan. I was invited to an Iftar dinner by a local family.

They welcomed me into their home with open arms, and the evening was filled with delicious food, engaging conversations, and a deep sense of community. It was an incredible experience.
