Construction resumes on Jeddah Tower, a 1km-tall skyscraper set to surpass the Burj Khalifa in height by 2028

The iconic Burj Khalifa, the tallest building in the world since 2010, may soon lose its coveted title.

Construction has officially restarted on Jeddah Tower in Saudi Arabia, a monumental project set to soar over 1 kilometre into the sky, surpassing Dubai’s 828-metre landmark.

Formerly known as the Jeddah Economic Company Tower, this ambitious project in Saudi Arabia has had a history of stop-start construction over the last decade.

However, work on the mega-tower is now full steam ahead.

The announcement was made on Monday, 20 January, with Prince Alwaleed bin Talal declaring the project’s return on social media with the words, “We’re back.”

Jeddah Tower is planned to reach over 1,000 metres tall, dwarfing the Burj Khalifa and setting a new global benchmark.

Designed by Adrian Smith, the same architect behind the Burj Khalifa, this record-breaking skyscraper will feature 157 floors of luxury residences, commercial offices, a Four Seasons hotel, and an observation deck offering breathtaking views of the Red Sea.

To date, 63 of the 157 planned storeys have been constructed, with approximately AED 1 billion already invested in the project.

The remaining AED 6 billion will be financed through internal resources and banking facilities, according to the Jeddah Economic Company.

Jeddah Tower is the centrepiece of a larger development spanning 5.3 million square metres.

Phase one of the project, covering 1.3 million square metres, has already been equipped with vital infrastructure such as electricity, water, sewage, flood drainage, and high-speed internet connectivity.

Construction of the tower is expected to take approximately 42 months, with completion targeted for the first half of 2028.

This timeline gives the Burj Khalifa a few more years to hold onto its title before it is overtaken by Jeddah’s rising marvel.
