New changes coming to Dubai

UAE’s sugar tax gets a makeover

If you love your fizzy drinks, January brings a shake-up. The UAE is introducing a tiered sugar tax system, meaning the more sugar in your drink, the higher the tax. Drinks with 8g+ sugar per 100ml get taxed more, moderate-sugar drinks slightly less, and low-sugar or artificially sweetened drinks are tax-free. The goal is to encourage healthier choices while still letting you sip your favourite drinks, but maybe think twice before grabbing that extra can of soda.

Shorter Fridays for school kids

Friday mornings just got sweeter for Dubai’s school kids. Starting January 9, private schools will finish classes by 11.30am instead of noon. The change aligns with the new Friday prayer times, which have moved forward to 12.45pm, giving students and staff plenty of time to head home before prayers start. That’s more morning sleep, more weekend fun, and fewer lunch rushes at school; basically a win for families everywhere as the city adjusts to a slightly earlier weekend rhythm.

Single-use plastics officially out

Dubai is saying goodbye to single-use plastics starting 1 January. This final phase bans items like plastic plates, food containers, cutlery, and cups with lids. Businesses have had time to prepare, but now it’s official: no more quick-plastic fixes. Plus, there’s a nationwide ban on importing, making, or trading single-use plastics and bags. It’s part of a broader push to reduce waste and protect the environment, so next time you grab food or drinks, think reusable or eco-friendly.

New prayer timings

From 2 January, 2026, Friday prayers will be standardised across the UAE. The General Authority of Islamic Affairs, Endowments, and Zakat confirmed that the sermon and congregational prayer will start at 12.45pm nationwide. The change also aligns with updated school timings, making mornings smoother for students and families. Whether heading to the mosque or planning your Friday schedule, this new uniform timing keeps everyone on the same page.
