World Para Triathlon Championships announced for Abu Dhabi

Nine race formats are scheduled.

The best para triathlon athletes will descend on Abu Dhabi this November in the hunt for a gold medal.

Taking place on Yas Island from 5 to 6 November, the World Triathlon Para Championships will include nine sport classes, competing in six medal events per gender.

The championships which were due to take place in Milan, Italy, will now be held in the UAE’s capital for two consecutive years.

General Secretary of Abu Dhabi Sports Council, Aref Al Awani, said it was exciting news for the capital to host the championships.

He said: “The World Triathlon Abu Dhabi presented by Daman encompasses everything that Abu Dhabi Sports Council strives to achieve — an internationally acclaimed sporting spectacle for all to enjoy, from those just starting out in triathlon up to newly-crowned Olympic and Paralympic champions fresh from Tokyo.

“This event also highlights Abu Dhabi’s unique ability to host major events and Championships with the highest possible standards of safety and security, in line with our role as a leading global destination for sports events.”

Running alongside the Para Championships, 110 elite athletes will compete in the World Triathlon Championship Series Abu Dhabi.

The two-day triathlon event will also host a variety of races for amateur triathletes. Participants can choose from the Super Sprint, Sprint, and Olympic race distances — either as an individual or as part of a relay team.

Entries for the age group race will open at 12 noon on 21 September.
