Review: Thrills and spills at Abu Dhabi Mall’s newest adventure attraction

The new adventure zone is now open.

There’s no easy way of saying it but Team Yalla found ourselves on the wrong side of the law recently.

We had our mugshots taken and were led down the cold, grey corridor, splashed with orange, before hearing the heavy metal doors close behind us (but you know we wouldn’t be staying in our cells for long).

Prison Island – Beat the Bars opened its doors on Monday (31 January) but before taking in its first inmates with escape on their minds, Team Yalla enjoyed a sneak peek at the mega venue on the third floor of Abu Dhabi Mall.

Strolling down the corridor, the first cell of 26 that confronts us sees us leave our equilibriums behind and take on mathematical conundrums in a tilted room. As we slip and slide our way around, looking for clues, the pressure of the clock is against us.

Unfortunately, Team Yalla is defeated by the riddles and time, but fortunately we can leave the cell (phew).

Next up is the Riot room; a cell consisting of a maze where you must run around, hitting flashing buttons as the noise and strobe lights of the security forces try to hunt you down.

Heart racing, adrenaline pumping, it’s thrilling fun (and great exercise) as we battle to reach the 100-point mark before our seconds evaporate, banging the buttons and into each other.  We make it and leave with century of points in the bank that are recorded on your hob with which you use to open each cell.

We move from cell to cell with varying success, (who thought passing a ball to one another on a pinball style contraception would be so challenging in Gates?) but as they say the higher the difficulty, the sweeter the success (and the more points).

It’s time to test out our climbing skills as we scramble across the walls, trying desperately not to fall into the shark-infested waters in the Cliffhanger cell. Our goal is to hit three lights simultaneously – easy – and we walk away with a full complement of points.

As we overcome our final cell, we head to the big screen to see our score – Team Yalla 889 points – the highest score of the day. There’s no prison that can hold us
