Exploring the works of Abby Weed Grey’s collection.
Calling all aesthetes and art lovers in Abu Dhabi, we have some wonderful news to report to you.
One the capital’s favourite art areans, NYU Abu Dhabi (NYUAD) art galleries is unlocking its doors once again to welcome visitors to explore its halls and walls on Monday 15 November.
Launching on 15 November, NYUAD will be celebrating its re-emergence from its summer slumber with a new exhibition; Modernisms: Iranian, Turkish, and Indian Highlights from NYU’s Abby Weed Grey Collection; its first physical exhibit since it moved to virtual programmes in spring of 2020 due to the onset of the Covid-19 pandemic.
Running until 5 February 2022, the exhibition Abby Weed Grey’s collection of prints, drawings, paintings and sculptures from her various trips in the 1960s and 1970s to Asia including Iran, India and Turkey.
Exploring the work of famed artists like Parviz Tanavoli, Fahrelnissa Zeid, and M.F. Husain, the works showcase how these artists drew on their heritages while engaging in global discourse on key issues.
Chief Curator at NYU Abu Dhabi and Executive Director of The NYUAD Art Gallery Maya Allison, said the gallery has huge significance and regional relevance.
“Abby Weed Grey’s goal was to promote international artistic exchange in an academic setting, and her mission unwittingly foreshadowed our own mission here at NYU Abu Dhabi, 35 years later.
“NYU’s Abby Weed Grey Collection is a great example of how the act of collecting today becomes part of future art histories, and can make possible true cultural dialogue, through the stories that each of these artworks bring to us.”
