REVIEW: A fantastic Thai-focused brunch to up your Saturdays

Thiptara Dubai

Stunning views and brilliant service are the tip of a fabulous Saturday brunch-berg at Thiptara

This Saturday soiree is about to rewrite your brunch playbook.

Front-seat views of the Burj Khalifa, gourmet Thai fare served to the table, and the sound of relaxed banter all around is just the kind of alive you need your weekend to be. Sat at the far end of the Palace Downtown, Thiptara dishes up not just authentic flavours — but an experience you’ll keep going back for.

Overlooking the lake directly in front of the Dubai Mall Fountains, the hotel’s makeover has unearthed a distinct elegance. Neutral tones with a splash of green, floor-to-ceiling windows and a light airy feel is just the beginning of a fairytale afternoon.

A labyrinthine-styled walk reveals tables in the new faux alfresco setting, with abundant natural light and foliage to keep the atmosphere cosy. An immediate green flag is the cheery staff, attentive to a fault and considerate of our needs from the word go.

Circling back to the brunch, the set menu served on the table is a welcome change from the massive buffets and queues that follow. Promising appetisers, main courses, desserts and an assortment of mixed drinks to lift up your spirits, the table is set for a memorable meal.

The brunch unfurls with more colours than our eyes can take in. From the popping red and green on the Spicy Green Papaya Salad to the succulent-looking Grilled Chicken Breast with a lime chilli dressing, the flavours are bold and tangy enough to linger long after.

The Mixed Seafood Salad was inhaled faster than you can read this sentence, and the chilli paste dressing was a ‘chef ’s kiss’.

The centrepiece of the starters is a plate loaded with Chicken Satay Skewers, Chicken Shumai, Steamed Prawn Dim Sum, and Steamed Vegetable Dumplings. The appetisers are accompanied by four stunning sauces, our favourites of which were the chunky peanut and a white vinegar. While the servers will advise you on the best pairings, we played a fun little game of condiment roulette instead.

The deceptively dainty appetisers left our waistbands a little uncomfortable, but our hearts hopeful for what’s to follow. Stir-fries were the name of the game with the arrival of the mains, featuring everything from Tiger Prawns to Lamb Chops, Mixed Vegetables to Fried Egg Noodles.

A refreshing departure from the Pad Thai stereotype, the dishes are best summed up as soul food. All the proteins were cooked beautifully, enhanced further by the sweet-spicy sauces. While Thai curries are either immediately favoured or dismissed, this one easily falls in the former category. Paired with Steamed Jasmine Rice, the curry itself is creamy without being heavy with a stunning balance of heat.

With an extravagant amount of food consumed, the presence of fruits and comforting flavours in the desserts was much needed.

The Water Chestnut Rubies paired with Jackfruit and Coconut Milk was light, fresh, and vibrant, with interesting enough textures including ice for a playful combination of crunch and chew.

The Thai ripe yellow mango with sweet sticky rice and coconut cream was textbook, everything we wanted it to be and more.

An elegant and intimate space, Thiptara lives up to its promise of delivering traditional Royal Thai cuisine with an emphasis on Bangkok-style seafood. Overall, the captivating new weekend brunch seamlessly marries revitalised aesthetics, tantalising flavours, and a fun experience to share with a special someone.
