Dubai’s private schools are acing it globally, ranking high in financial literacy and creative thinking

Dubai’s private schools are killing it on the global stage! Acing the international rankings, they’ve snagged second place in financial literacy and sixth in creative thinking, according to the latest Programme for International Student Assessment (PISA) 2022 by the Organisation for Economic Cooperation and Development (OECD).

What’s PISA, anyway?

If you haven’t heard of PISA, it’s a big deal in the education world.

This study, happening every three years, checks out how well 15-year-old students can use their reading, maths, and science skills in real-life situations.

For the first time in 2022, Dubai schools joined the extra categories of financial literacy and creative thinking.

Money matters: Financial Literacy

Financial literacy isn’t just about knowing how to count your pennies.

According to the OECD, it’s all about understanding financial concepts and risks, and having the skills, motivation, and confidence to make savvy money decisions.

Dubai’s students are rocking this, scoring 522 points, while the OECD average is 498.

That’s a huge win!

– 82% of Dubai students said they know how to manage their money

– 79% have savings goals for things they want to buy or do

Thinking outside the box: Creative thinking

Creative thinking is where students come up with, evaluate, and improve ideas.

It’s about finding original and effective solutions and making impactful creative expressions.

Dubai schools scored 36 points, higher than the OECD average of 33 points.

Go Dubai!

– 84% of students performed at or above the OECD baseline in creative thinking skills

– 74% are confident they can come up with creative ideas for school projects

Shoutouts to the heroes behind the success

Aisha Miran, Director General of the Knowledge and Human Development Authority (KHDA), gave a big shoutout to school leaders, teachers, parents, and of course, the hardworking students.

“We’re grateful to all who inspire and support our students to achieve these remarkable results,” she said.

Fatma Belrehif, CEO of the Dubai Schools Inspection Bureau, highlighted the link between creative thinking and strong performance in other subjects.

“Schools that excel in creative thinking also achieve high scores in math, reading, and science. This shows how important it is to develop our students’ skills in all areas to prep them for the future,” she added.

Dubai schools rocking in other areas too

The PISA 2022 results, announced in December 2023, also placed Dubai’s private schools high in other categories:

– Ninth in Maths: Mean score of 497, beating the OECD average by 25 points

– 13th in Reading: Mean score of 498

– 14th in Science: Mean score of 503
