Starting school in the UAE? Discover expert advice to ease nerves, build confidence, and make the first day a success

Starting school is a major transition for children — and for parents too.

From building school readiness and supporting the settling-in period to navigating that all-important first-day drop-off, UAE schools share practical, reassuring tips to help families approach this new chapter with calm and confidence.

Starting big school with confidence

Steph Johnson, Early Years Lead and Assistant Headteacher (Foundation Stage), Jebel Ali School

“Starting school is a big milestone, and it’s natural for parents to worry,” says Steph Johnson of Jebel Ali School.

“The good news is that children are incredibly adaptable, especially when they’re supported by confident, nurturing adults. A calm and supportive approach from both home and school works wonders.”

Top tips for a strong start:

  • Lay the groundwork in advance. Buy the uniform early, let your child try it on for role play, revisit photos from orientation, or watch the school’s Early Years videos together. “These little rituals create familiarity and comfort,” she explains.
  • Build an emotional vocabulary toolbox. Teach simple phrases like “Help me please” or “Can I have a turn next?” to express feelings and build friendships. “Books and stories are a brilliant way to spark these conversations,” Steph adds.
  • Be honest at drop-off. Avoid quick promises you can’t keep. Instead, reassure with truth and predictability: “I’ll miss you too, but I’ll be back after lunchtime.” Steph says, “Predictability builds clarity, and clarity builds confidence — exactly what children need as they step into their new world.”

The parent–child partnership

Amy Hughes, Assistant Principal – Nursery & EYFS, Ranches Primary School

For Amy Hughes at Ranches Primary School, the transition into formal education is about families as much as children.

“It’s not just a transition for children — it’s a huge change for parents, too.

Our role is to create a safe, warm environment where everyone feels seen, heard, and supported.”

Key advice for parents:

  • Prioritise communication. Share concerns early — even small worries at home can give teachers important insights. “Children often tell parents things they won’t share at school, and that knowledge really helps us to support them,” she says.
  • Celebrate school together. Talk positively, show excitement, and celebrate small wins. “Children take their cues from us. If they see you’re confident and enthusiastic, they’ll feel it too.”
  • Talk, talk, talk. Fill your home with books, songs, stories and rich vocabulary. “The strongest predictor of long-term academic success is exposure to language,” Amy notes.

Routines, reading and reassurance

Niamh Callanan, Head of Early Years, Dubai Schools Al Khawaneej

At Dubai Schools Al Khawaneej, Niamh Callanan highlights the power of consistent routines and independence.

“Children thrive when their environment is predictable and supportive,” she says.

Guidance for a smoother settling-in:

  • Build excitement for school. Visit the school building, involve your child in choosing their bag or uniform, and join orientation activities. “Familiarity reduces apprehension and builds positive anticipation,” Niamh explains.
  • Establish consistent routines. Reinforce school-day bedtimes, wake-ups, and mealtimes in the days and weeks before term. Predictability helps children feel secure and prepared.
  • Foster a love for reading. Continue daily stories and visit the library. “Books like The Colour Monster Goes to School help children understand their feelings about new beginnings,” she suggests.
  • Practice independence. Encourage age-appropriate skills such as opening lunchboxes, packing bags, and carrying belongings. “These little acts of independence boost confidence right from the start.”

Final thoughts

Starting school is an emotional milestone, often with as many nerves for parents as for children.

But as Steph at Jebel Ali School reminds us: “There might be a few moments of big emotions, but there will also be wonder, curiosity, laughter and growth. With a little groundwork, children soon stride into school with confidence.”

And for Amy at Ranches Primary, the milestone is one to embrace: “With the right support, starting school becomes a joyful beginning for the whole family.”
