One of the world’s great artists will be returning to the capital as Kid Koala presents The Storyville Mosquito at The Red Theater on Thursday 12 and Friday 13 May.
In his first gig at The Arts Center at NYU Abu Dhabi (NYUAD) since the hugely successful live stage performance of Nufonia Must Fall, Kid Koala tells the tale of a young mosquito who leaves his small town in the country to seek fame and fortune in the big city as well as fulfilling his dream to play in one of the greatest jazz bands of all time at Sid Villa’s Music Hall.
A show for the whole family to enjoy, the live animated graphic novel is performed, filmed and scored in real time with an original music soundtrack featuring a trio of musicians and Kid Koala on turntables, keyboards and electronics.
The Montreal-based scratch DJ, film composer, theatre producer and visual artist has released five solo albums and toured with musical royalty including Radiohead, Arcade Fire, Beastie Boys and The Preservation Hall Jazz Band.
He also has an impressive list of collaborations, working with Gorillaz, Deltron 3030 and produced the Music To Draw To album series featuring vocalists Emiliana Torrini and Trixie Whitley.
Speaking on the show, Executive Artistic Director at The Arts Center at NYUAD Bill Bragin said: “Kid Koala’s show is magically playful, as you watch an animated film being made in real time, in a moving performance full of emotion, craft, and art that welcomes the entire family.
“As with his previous show for The Arts Center, Nufonia Must Fall, it is complicated to describe The Storyville Mosquito verbally, but the second you see it, you get it.
“Kid Koala brings such a joyous and open energy, and brilliant sense of innovation and inventiveness to NYU Abu Dhabi, and we are thrilled to finally premiere this piece that we co-commissioned after a two-year pause due to the pandemic.”
Tickets are priced at AED 100 and can be purchased online at The Arts Center at NYUAD.
All attendees must present a green status on their Al Hosn app to gain entry.
