Team Yalla speaks to the musical director of the new show who reveals his own journey and provides insights into the world of theatre in Dubai

The theatre industry in Dubai is set to be swept away by the magic of musical production this weekend as MTDXB (Musical Theatre Dubai) and TODA (Theatre Of Digital Art) Dubai, join forces to present ‘Behind The Red Curtain,’ in TODA, Souk Madinat, Jumeirah, Dubai.

This is a captivating and enchanting production that promises to be a must-see event for theatre enthusiasts and musical lovers alike, presented as part of TODA’s Neotheater initiative.

Set to grace the stage on 1 and 2 December at Souk Madinat’s Theatre of Digital Art (TODA) ‘Behind The Red Curtain’ is a visually stunning musical theatre show that seamlessly blends outstanding performances by a cast of nearly 50 talented singers and dancers.

The production boasts breath-taking choreography and a medley of Broadway and West End musical theatre hits as well as a vastly experienced and talented cast and background team, including musical director Adam Laird, who shares his own personal journey and various insights into the industry.

What is your own personal story or background and how has this led you to become a Musical Director in Dubai?

I’m a secondary music teacher, composer and performer originally from the UK and have worked as a musical director and conductor for a number of institutions before moving to Dubai.

MTDXB showcases the very best of performing arts and it was a great honor to work with them on Dubai’s very first amateur dramatic performance of ‘The Addams Family’ last year.

The company is moving onwards and upwards, and it’s great to be involved again and to see how much we are with our new show.

What can the audience expect from the upcoming show?

Behind The Red Curtain is not your typical “songs from the shows” medley! The production team have worked hard to put together a programme that lets the audience have a sneak peek into the making of a musical and all of the factors that combine to make it a successful one.

There will be songs performed from a wide range of productions, from classical Broadway to contemporary hits, involving some amazing soloists and some toe-tapping full chorus items. It is sure to be a treat for all the family!

Is digital art the latest development in theatre? And if so, what does it entail?

The collaboration between TODA and MTDXB sees two of the most imaginative creative forces in Dubai combine for the first time. It’s quite exciting to see our company in the magnificent venue for the first time and I’m looking forward to seeing (and hearing!) our audience’s reactions.

What is the most satisfying aspect of putting together a show of this magnitude?

Working with a like-minded cast and production team who have a similar ethos has been a truly rewarding experience. Who knew there were so many talented and passionate people in Dubai willing to work together to put on a high-quality show? MTDXB is a real family, and we all work very hard and enjoy working together to create something awesome.

What does the future hold for MTDXB?

MTDXB are busy preparing for the next big show in 2024. Keep checking our website musicaltheatredubai.com to see how you can be involved either on the stage, a part of the audience, or ‘Behind the Red Curtain’.

The show is set to commence this Friday 1 December and will run over two days. Adam and his production team and cast are very excited in the lead up to the event and hope to see you all there this weekend!
