Rembrandt, Vermeer and the Dutch Golden Age Exhibition

Dutch Golden Age art exhibition to open at the Louvre Abu Dhabi marking the 350th Anniversary of Rembrandt’s Death

Starting 14 February, the Louvre Abu Dhabi will display works by the Dutch masters Rembrandt and Vermeer. Works by the two artists are part of the gallery’s first exhibition of 2019: Rembrandt, Vermeer and the Dutch Golden Age: Masterpieces from the Leiden collection and the Musée du Louvre.

“Rembrandt is a master of the Golden Age,” says Director of Louvre Abu Dhabi, Manuel Rabaté. “He’s a universal genius, he’s connected to the world.”

The exhibition explores the 1600s when the Netherlands were an extremely powerful trading force, not only in Europe but throughout the world. Lara Yeager-Crasselt, Curator of The Leiden Collection, New York, explains that “the dialogue among these works offers a distinctive glimpse into the dynamics of artistic exchange that shaped the art of the Dutch Golden Age.”

The exhibition’s 95 works include Vermeer’s Young Woman Seated at a Virginaland Rembrandt’s Portrait of a Man. The museum has also acquired a rare oil sketch by Rembrandt, showing the Christ figure bent forward in thought. The study, Head of a Young Man in Prayer (circa 1655), will be on display for the first-time during Rembrandt, Vermeer and the Dutch Golden Age: Masterpieces from The Leiden Collection and the Musee du Louvre, and will remain in Abu Dhabi on permanent view.

Rembrandt, Vermeer and the Dutch Golden Age is at the Louvre Abu Dhabi from 14 February to 18 May.
