Calling all culture vultures, a major exhibition at the Sharjah Museum of Islamic Civilisation has finally opened.
Venice and the Arts of Islam exhibition will demonstrate the far-reach of Islamic civilization’s influence to the world, especially in the realm of arts.
Running until 2 July 2022, the event showcases some 70 artefacts over three distinct sections titled, Encounters, Dialogues, and Inspirations with each chapter featuring important documents and selection of objects of both Islamic and Venetian art.
Held in collaboration with Fondazione Musei Civici di Venezia in Italy, the displays contain never before seen objects from the East including official gifts to the Doge (the head of the Serenissima Republic) by ruler of Persia, Shah Abbas The Great.
There are also Byzantine and Arab gold coins, abacus books, tariff manuals, medals, the Qibla compass and copies of the Quran that the Venetians read to have a better understanding of the people with which they traded.
Speaking on the opening of the exhibition, Director General of Sharjah Museums Authority, Manal Ataya said; “Inspired by the vision of His Highness Sheikh Dr. Sultan Bin Muhammad Al Qasimi, Member of the Supreme Council and Ruler of Sharjah, the exhibition is an endeavour to show how historically, cross-cultural interactions effectively connected people and continue to do so.
“It speaks of the unique relationship between Venice and the Islamic world at the time and reflects the far-ranging influence of the Islamic civilization across the globe.”
