Heat up your Thursday nights with Horizon restaurant

Sample Mexico in Abu Dhabi.

Guacamole, tacos, burritos, when it comes to Mexican fare, you would be hard pressed to come up with another cuisine that has captured the taste buds (and hearts) of gastronomes throughout the globe as much as the Latin American country’s dishes.

And while a trip to Mexico City, Cancún or Guadalajara sounds just as tempting as a quesadilla packed with melted cheese, a colourful assortment of peppers and tender, pulled beef, there is no need to catch a plane for all your Mexican food cravings with Horizon restaurant’s new theme night dedicated to all the aromas, colours and flavours of Mexico.

As epicures who are very partial to some Mexican grub, Team Yalla couldn’t wait to go along last Thursday (30 September) for a spicy evening of food and atmosphere and it is safe to say, Horizon restaurant blew our sombreros off.

Making our way through the Khalidiya Palace by Rotana, we don’t need any directions as the enticing smells of Mexican food waft through the air as well as the relaxing tones of Mexican Mariachi music. We take our seats, a lovely curved sofa that gives a perfect view of the live cooking stations (as well as people watching), while being served a soft mixed drink (go for the passionfruit). However, we are not in our seats for long as the fragrant scents of food are impossible to resist.

Grabbing a plate, it is one of those buffets where the only difficulty you will have is choosing which dish to sample first. We recommend to start with the cold orders like Mexican pasta salad, (think a pasta salad with plenty of peppers) and a beef salad with exquisitely cooked meat and egg. Once those are gobbled up, we move around to the hot cooking stations where our eyes are caught immediately by quesadillas and burritos with a green, spinach wrap. Of course, they are truly moreish so we sneak in another.

At this point, a time out is needed and we go for a wonder outside where the hotel’s wonderful terrace and pool is located. While the weather is just a little too toasty for an al fresco dining session, come the end of October, this is where you want to be enjoying your Mexican night at Horizan restaurant.

Back inside, we’re ready to go again with an enormous slab of beef from the meat station as well as Mexican mash (mash with peppers), Mexican meat balls that have a tasty kick and Tex Mex styled fish. Again, the food disappears within seconds due to its deliciousness but it’s a buffet so we head back up for more (for research purposes of course).

Then it is time to put a stop to our sweet teeth quivering. Desserts sees little pieces of probably the most chocolaty, chocolate cake that you will ever wrap your lips around, churros, tres leches cake, and Mexican cocadas. These mini-sweet treats are the perfect way to end the night.

Priced at AED 139, the evening is probably one of the best value dining experiences in the entire capital and you will be shouting ‘vamos’ to you friends and family to go.
