Nobody ‘takes tea’ better than the English and if there’s one venue where you simply must partake in such a ritual, it has to be the Conrad Abu Dhabi Etihad Towers’ Observation Deck at 300.
There’s always an air of excitement as one steps into the lift that climbs at great speeds to reach the 74th floor. It’s not our first time, but we don’t know anyone who could tire of those incredible 360-degree views, including us. Today the sky is a crisp blue and we can see for miles as the capital and beyond is laid out before us like a glittering jewel.

But back to that three-tier cake stand fully laden with mouth-watering sweet and savoury treats. Shown to our table overlooking the clear, blue waters of the Arabian Gulf far below, we are greeted by a rather refreshing beverage of iced white house tea infused with elderflower, lemon and that all important pink cherry syrup that reminds us why we are here.
The cake stand is overflowing with goodness for two, making that age-old adage of ‘tea for two’ even more appealing.
The lower tier is filled with mini savouries including walnut bread filled with brie, wild honey and aged balsamic roasted figs no less that beg to be slowly savoured. The Amaranth bread contains juicy pieces of grilled Cajun chicken, pencil asparagus and beetroot – a healthy and welcome treat. There are bite-size tarts too, one of which is brimming in local red pumpkin, Greek feta cheese and caramalised onions all of which melt in the mouth.
There are more savoury offerings of course, yet none remained before we tackled the cute cakes and sweet treats.
A beautifully pink box surrenders a selection of white chocolate and cranberry scones that we individually slather with lemon curd, strawberry jam and clotted cream.
In the cake department, vanilla and strawberry Battenburg, an English favourite, is there, as is the classic strawberry tart and tangy lemon and raspberry roulade among others. We adored the falooda created from pink rose petals, giving a nod to India.
Washed down with the perfectly brewed Earl Grey, we were completely satiated, more so knowing that we were eating for a cause that aims to saves lives.
