REVIEW: Ditch the fanfare for a refined experience and flavours at the Demon Duck brunch

The Demon Duck brunch is an experience best described as a gourmand’s ideal weekend out

 

Theatrical live entertainment and Insta-baiting dishes plus interiors seem to be a common vein running through most brunches in Dubai today. The Demon Duck brunch then, comes as a welcome change of pace for more reasons than one.

Our favourites in no particular order included a) the minimalist interiors that immediately convey a sense of classy elegance, b) the welcome absence of dancers and c) a DJ that set the mood for a blissful afternoon at an agreeable decibel.

In keeping with the country’s sustainable conscience, Demon Duck offers a set menu for their brunch, eliminating both waste and worry of making the best choices.

The gracious staff guided us through the menu, easing us into the afternoon with a delightfully refreshing Chop chop suey salad plated tableside. With French windows providing gorgeous views of Bluewaters Island as a backdrop, each bite of the crisp vegetables drizzled with a honey citrus & sesame dressing just got better.

Demon Chef Alvin Leung’s brainchild, the brunch menu offers the best of his particular brand of X-treme Chinese cooking. Where the dim sum selection is a pure Chinese celebration, the Shrimp toast, Crispy duck with Alvin’s special hummus and scallop ceviche represent pan-Asian fusion cuisine.

With the entrees as filling as they were delectable, we opted to wait a while ahead of the mains. Circling back to the brunch vibes, one cannot emphasise enough the admiration for being able to converse without having to yell over blaring pop remixes or around the overdone dragon dancing.

You get to pick one main each, which is accompanied by a simply delicious egg fried rice. After much agonising, we settled on the Rainbow trout with a nuoc cham sauce and the 72 hour braised short ribs with kalbi sauce. The sauce was the perfect tart accompaniment to the exquisitely cooked fish, and the short ribs were so tender they disappeared almost immediately.

The molecular gastronomy bit of Chef Alvin’s brand comes raging through in the Demon dessert platter. It’s extravagant to the T and decadent in a fresh, light manner befitting the end of a flavour-rich meal.

With the staff generously plying us with Daisy Ducks and Woozy at Wyndham throughout, this meal stood a class apart and how. If you’re looking for an afternoon that serves up authentic Asian flavours minus the been there done that fanfare of brunches – we 11/10 recommend this Michelin-approved affair.
