BSAK achieves record GCSE results for third successive year

37% of BSAK Students achieve grade 8 or 9 (equivalent to old A*) 

Following last week’s record-breaking A Level results, BSAK students conclude an outstanding 50th anniversary year with unparalleled GCSE results. The number of students achieving top grades has increased for the third consecutive year. An exceptional 19% of all of BSAK’s GCSE entries were graded at the highest possible grade 9, which is nearly five times the UK average. This is an increase from 18% in 2018. Students achieving grade 8 or 9 (equivalent to the old A*) is also the highest ever for the School at 37% of all students, which is 3% higher than last year’s recorded results. This year BSAK’s cohort of 116 students made 1,002 GCSE entries.

Headmaster Mark Leppard MBE commented: ‘This is another set of outstanding results for our brilliant students, with more than a third of them achieving an 8 or 9.  The UK National average is at 11%, which just shows how amazing these results are. I am incredibly proud of our students’ achievements as they continue to exceed all expectations.”

Key 2019 GCSE results highlights: 

▪ For the third successive year, BSAK students have achieved more than half of all grades at 9-7 (A*/A) with 56% of results at grade 7 or higher

▪ Grades 9-5 (B) were also up 3% this year at 86%

▪ Overall 95% of all grades were at grade 4 and above.

 

There were some exceptional personal achievements this year:

▪ 4 BSAK students achieved 7 or more grade 9s. (There were only 732 students who achieved this worldwide last year).

  • Impressively, well over half (67 of the 116 students) achieved 5 or more 9-7 (A*/A) grades this year.
  • Overall 95% of students achieved 5 or more 9-4 (A*-C) grades, including English and Maths.

 

Among the school’s top performers are:

▪ Solal Afoto who received 9 in Biology, 9 in Chemistry, 9 in Further Maths, 9 in Geography, 9 in Physics, 9 in Spanish, 9 in French, 9 in Maths, 8 in English Language and 8 in English Literature

▪ Anika Mehra who received 9 in Maths, 9 in Further Maths, 9 in Biology, 9 in Geography, 9 in Media and 9 in French

▪ Adele Loridon who received 9 in Biology, 9 in Chemistry, 9 in Geography, 9 in Physics, 9 in Spanish, 9 in French, 9 in Maths, 8 in English Language and 8 in English Literature

  • Katherine Poon who received 9 in Biology, 9 in Chemistry, 9 in Geography, 9 in History, 9 in Physics and 9 in Maths
  • Farah Harfoush who received 9 in Chemistry, 9 in Biology, 9 in History, 9 in Physics, 9 in Maths and 9 in Music, 8 in Drama, 8 in English Language and 8 inEnglish Literature
  • Zeina Fouad who received 9 in Maths, 9 in Biology, 9 in Chemistry, 8 in Physics and 7 in English

Farah Harfoush said, “The exams were really tough this year, but scoring six 9s is really incredible. I am beyond pleased; I still cannot believe it”

Zeina Fouad added “I am absolutely delighted with all my grades but will appeal my English grade because I believe I did better.”

This is the combined outcome of sheer determination, hard work and resilience of our amazing students and incredible teachers. Putting these results into context; BSAK is a fully inclusive and academically non-selective school and by any measure these results are world class. I am very proud of all of our students, our staff and would like to also acknowledge the support which we receive from the parents, families and the wider school community.”

Under the British Curriculum, following GCSEs, the majority of students will go on to Sixth Form education. The BSAK Sixth Form offers 26 A Level subjects, 3 BTEC Level 3 Diplomas in Engineering, Business Studies and Sport and a unique Future Leaders Programme, so there is plenty of choice for everyone for the next stage in their education.
