Learn about migration stories of refugee youth through a stunning theatrical performance premiering in the Middle East.
A new theatrical work that explores the commonalities of migration and mapping at the center of worlds in motion that places all of us in this historical moment of the largest migration in recorded history. Created in collaboration with artist Kaneza Schaal and writer Christopher Myers, Cartography draws on their work with refugee youth.
“A wonder of theater-making, Cartography is a production full of cracking story-telling with booming contemporary musical interludes between scenes.” – DC Metro
Created for the whole family to experience, Cartography aims to engage young audiences. Visual tools like map-making and inventory meet performance elements such as filmmaking and dancing; sculptures create an array of visual journeys; sound sensor technology responds to actors’ voices, activating a virtual storm; cellphones are used to mark memories and distances traveled. Developed in part at NYU Abu Dhabi, including the work of NYUAD Interactive Media graduates.
The audience is invited to examine their own lives and the maps we have yet to draw.
This performance is for all ages.
Middle East Premiere, Cartography – Kaneza Schaal & Christopher Myers, Co-commissioned by The Arts Center, Thursday, Feb 6 – Saturday, Feb 15 at Various Times, The Black Box
