“So, how is this done?” you may ask. Research has shown that in the first five years of life, a child’s brain develops more and faster than at any other time in his/her life. Therefore, this means that the experiences that children gain in these first five years are crucial to their overall development.
At Blooming Buds Nursery, the nursery believes that play and learning cannot be divided. Play IS learning whether it is child-initiated or practitioner-initiated. Play is underpinned by the EYFS, the National British Curriculum for Early Years, which the staff follows at Blooming Buds Nursery.
Many parents ask about the academic part of learning and seem to be in a hurry for their child to acquire skills such as reading, writing and math. However, research has shown that the most important aspect for learning is the personal, social and emotional development of the child along with communication and language and physical development.
Children need to develop their self-esteem and confidence, to feel happy and secure before they are able to move onto academic programmes. They need to be able-to self-regulate their emotions and learn about boundaries, rules and regulations before they are able to sit quietly for a length of time at their desks. They need to be able to communicate and learn to use language before moving onto reading and writing.
Children must be given the freedom to explore and experience new things by using their senses, engaging in hands-on activities in a welcoming, unstructured environment. They need to be able to take small risks, to socialise with peers and to build up their self-confidence, and most importantly feel accepted and belong as part of a small community.
