Ring the New Year in with Culture

Spend a day at Al Jahili Fort to learn about UAE History at the Earthen Architectural exhibition.

Ring The New Year In With Culture

Though you might have spent your last few days of 2019 reveling, why not go into this new year exploring UAE history and culture with your family and resolve to spend more time together learning and exploring the UAE? Al Ain is a great place to begin this pursuit with so many UNESCO Heritage Sites, and there’s a host of family-friendly events beckoning visitors east of Abu Dhabi city and into the desert. Let’s start this exploration into Al Ain with Al Jahili Fort on New Year’s Day at the Earthen Architectural exhibition.

Set in lush landscaped gardens, the picturesque Al Jahili Fort and the stepped layers of the main tower, are one of Al Ain’s most iconic structures. The fort was built in 1891 to protect palm plantations, ensuring inter-tribal peace and protecting the mountain passes. Inside the fort, the small photo exhibition of Wilfred Thesiger is in itself worth stopping for. The British explorer crossed the Empty Quarter in the mid-forties on camel back and documented what he saw with his camera, making this exhibition a voyage through time back to the Bedouin life in the UAE region.

The Earthen Architectural exhibition provides visitors of all ages with the opportunity to learn about the techniques of traditional earthen architecture. It aims to highlight restoration projects at Al Jahili Fort, which have led to the Terra Award, among other accolades.

The programme includes a tour of the exhibition and a screening of a documentary produced to tell the restoration journey of Al Jahili Fort.

Don’t miss the documentary movie on site and view the small exhibition on Sheikh Zayed The First.
