Approximately 300 million tonnes of plastic are produced each year to make bags, bottles, packages, and other products for people all over the world. Unfortunately, only about ten percent of this plastic is properly recycled and reused. The rest ends up in landfills or littering our natural environment, where it leaches dangerous chemicals into the nearby soil and water, endangering humans and wildlife alike. Most of us know that single-use plastic is a problem, but not everyone knows that, by taking a few small steps, we can make a very big difference.
Yalla is introducing its Yalla Plastic Pledge to encourage Abu Dhabi residents to keep our city and sea beautiful by saying ‘no’ to single-use plastic.
Take Action With The Four 4Rs
REFUSE disposable plastic wherever possible. Choose items that are not packaged in plastic, and carry your own bags, containers and utensils. Refuse straws whenever you eat out and inform the proprietors why.
REFUSE disposable plastic wherever possible. Choose items that are not packaged in plastic, and carry your own bags, containers and utensils. Refuse straws whenever you eat out and inform the proprietors why.
REUSE durable utensils, to-go containers, bottles, bags, and other everyday items. Choose glass, paper, stainless steel, wood, ceramic and bamboo over plastic.
REDUCE your plastic footprint. Cut down on purchasing goods that contain excessive plastic packaging and parts. If your purchase leaves behind plastic trash, don’t buy it.
RECYCLE what you can’t refuse, reduce, or reuse. Pay attention to the entire life cycle of items you bring into your life, from source to manufacturing to distribution to disposal.
Do Your Part
In the coming months, Yalla will be running a series of articles and initiatives to highlight the good work of individuals, organisations, and companies in the capital. We will also shout out businesses that have committed to reducing their plastic footprint, so you can choose to frequent environmentally sustainable businesses and wield the power of the purse.
