Aquatics Festival added to FINA World Swimming Championships

Open water swimmers, divers and high divers will compete.

There is 100 days until the FINA World Swimming Championships makes a splash in Abu Dhabi.

And to celebrate the landmark, the Abu Dhabi Sports Council has announced an Aquatics Festival to run in parallel to the championships.

Taking place between 16 to 21 December on Yas Island, the world’s best short-course swimmers, open water swimmers, diver and high divers will descend on the capital to compete in a number of events including the FINA High Diving Qualifier for the 2022 FINA World Championships in Japan, the final leg of the annual circuit of the FINA/CNSG Marathon Swim World Series, a new open water swimming mixed relay and a FINA Diving Team Exhibition.

Speaking on the announcement His Excellency Aref Al Awani, General Secretary of Abu Dhabi Sports Council, said he was delighted to add a number of events to what will be an already memorable sporting occasion.

He said: “As we mark 100 days to go until the start of the FINA World Swimming Championships (25m), we are delighted that multiple additional disciplines have been added to the schedule for what promises to be a truly memorable sporting event.

“Since the initial confirmation of the FINA World Swimming Championships (25m), we have been very much looking forward to welcoming some of the world’s most talented athletes to Abu Dhabi and Yas Island for a historical occasion, and this latest announcement adds to the overall sense of excitement and anticipation.”

FINA President Captain Husain Al-Musallam echoed His Excellency’s comments that the aquatic festival was a superb add-on to the championships.

He said: “We are confident this aquatic festival will prove hugely popular with our athletes, the sports fans and the wider UAE community.

“With an increased number of top-class athletes from around the world now set to be involved in this multi-sport programme, the FINA World Swimming Championships (25m) promises to be the perfect occasion to conclude the sporting year.”

The news comes hot on the heels of the confirmation that more $2.8million (AED 10,284,344) will be up for grabs at the FINA World Swimming Championships in the Etihad Arena – the biggest pot for any FINA swimming event ever.

And any swimmer who beats a world record will walk away with a cool $50,000 (AED 183,649).
