Guggenheim Abu Dhabi announces opening date

Initially due to open in 2012.

Art fans finally have a date to pencil into the diary after the opening date for Guggenheim Abu Dhabi was revealed.

The year 2025 is expected to be the year the Frank Gehry designed Abu Dhabi branch will open its doors to visitors, some 20 years after the project was announced.

The museum has experienced enormous delays, missing various opening targets in 2012 and 2017.

However, at a press conference in Basel, Switzerland the museum’s director, Richard Armstrong said that plans are finally falling into place.

According to local media sources he said: “We think it should be five years from next week.

“It looks like everything is coming together so we can say something definitive. It has been a relatively long gestation.”

The art museum which will be 320,000 square feet, will be located at the cultural complex on Saadiyat Island and is expected exhibit some 600 pieces of work from 1965 onwards.
