What does the word Ramadan actually mean?

The word Ramadan comes from the Arabic root ramiḍaor ar-ramaḍ, which means scorching heat or dryness.

 

When does Ramadan start this year?

Ramadan always begins with the sighting of the new moon.

 

At what times do Muslims fast during this period?

During the month of Ramadan, Muslims fast from dawn until dusk.

 

Why is Ramadan celebrated?

Ramadan is celebrated as it is the month in which the Prophet Mohammed (PBUH) received the first of the revelations that make up the Quran.

 

How is the fast broken?

The fast is traditionally broken by eating dates and drinking water.

 

Do all Muslims have to fast?

No. Children, pregnant women or those who are sick do not have to fast.

 

What is suhoor?

Each day before dawn, Muslims observe a pre-fast meal, which is called suhoor.

 

What is the meal called that Muslims partake in to break their fast?

The meal that breaks the fast after sunset is called iftar.

 

Why are dates often used to break the fast?

According to tradition, Prophet Mohammed (PBUH) broke the fast with three dates.

 

What is the meaning of ‘Ramadan Kareem’?

The greeting ‘Ramadan Kareem’ means ‘have a blessed Ramadan’.

 

Is there a celebration directly after Ramadan?

Yes there is. Following Ramadan, Muslims celebrate Eid Al Fitr, which is a day of thanks where families share a lavish feast.
