There also new rules on technical requirements of bikes in the capital.
Cyclists and electric bike riders will now need to use the appropriate lane when travelling around the Abu Dhabi authorities have announced.
The measures announced on 26 March will mean that those travelling by bicycle, scooter or electric bike will not be permitted to travel along footpaths and pedestrian walk-ways if there is a cycle lane available.
Should there be no lane in the area a cyclist wishes to travel, you must use side-roads where the speed limit is usually 20 km per hour, and you must stay on the far right-hand side of the road or sidewalks and pavements dedicated to the use of bicycles.

Cyclists will also be required to wear helmets and give right-of-way to pedestrians while decreasing their speed at intersections and crossroads.
It is also completely prohibited to travel in the opposite direction of the road under any circumstance and all bicycles and micromobility devices may only carry the user.

The measures announced by The Integrated Transport Centre (ITC) of the Department of Municipalities and Transport (DMT) in cooperation with the Abu Dhabi Police GHQ also revealed new regulations in relation to technical specifications as well as renting a bicycle and micromobility device.
All bicycles and electric bikes must be equipped with a white headlight and a red taillight as well as possessing a handlebar- mounted sound device and brakes.
All rental bikes must be fitted with a tracking device and must meet all technical specifications laid down by the ITC.
All rental businesses must also provide insurance to users to cover any accidents in which one of their bicycles may be involved.
The ITC has confirmed that fines will be imposed on any individual or company that fails to abide by the new regulations.
