More than 800 participants took part on a 2.5km walk.
Al Hudayriyat Island was the setting as hundreds of Abu Dhabi residents came together to mark World Autism Acceptance Month.
Organised by the Special Olympics UAE in partnership with Mohammed bin Rashid Center for Special Education (MRC-NECC), Emirates College for Advanced Education and Emirates Autism Society, more than 800 participants including Families of Special Olympics UAE Athletes and People of Determination with autism, enjoyed a 2.5km along the Hudayriyat Heritage Trail.
Attended by Sheikh Mohammed bin Khalifa bin Mohammed bin Khalid Al Nahyan, The Walk for Inclusion highlights the importance of autism acceptance throughout the globe.
Speaking at the event Talal Al Hashemi, National Director, Special Olympics UAE said; “The designation of this important occasion has evolved to reflect a shift from awareness to acceptance.
“Acceptance is when an autistic person is embraced, given equal opportunities to thrive, and can experience connection to other people – and this is where we need to be.
“Equally, we are here to celebrate the contributions, diversity, and uniqueness of autistic individuals in our community. It is important for us to not only strive for their inclusion, but also to accept them for who they are and celebrate their differences.
“Autistic individuals have a lot to teach us and walking together shows us that everyone can take steps forward and contribute in their own way. I would like to thank Special Olympics UAE’s partners and supporters and everyone who made this evening a genuine expression of autism acceptance.
“There is no doubt that the community engagement we experienced will be carried forward beyond today to strengthen support and empowerment of all members of society, including autistic people.”
