COOL RUNNINGS: Brave adventures get set for Arctic challenge

Arctic Challenge Crew In Dubai For The Arabian Ocean Rowing Team

Arabian Ocean Rowing Team hits the slopes of Ski Dubai for Arctic training

In an unexpected twist straight out of an action movie, the Arabian Ocean Rowing Team, comprising Toby Gregory, Orlagh Dempsey, and Andrew Savill, swapped their oars for skis as they wrapped up their final training session at the most unlikely of places—Ski Dubai!

These brave adventurers have been honing their ice-cold endurance in the Middle East’s premier indoor ski resort, because where else would you prep for an Arctic Ocean rowing expedition, right?

Picture this: a trio of intrepid explorers, normally found battling ocean waves, now zipping down snowy slopes in the heart of the desert.

This isn’t just any training; it’s prepping for their 1,500km Arctic Challenge where they’ll row from Tromso, Norway to Longyearbyen, Svalbard in an eight-meter boat with no engine, no motor, and no sails. Just sheer, unadulterated muscle power!

From snow bunnies to Arctic avengers

Toby, Orlagh, and Andrew took to the real snow at Ski Dubai to simulate the frigid conditions they’ll face in the Arctic.

“Training in Ski Dubai has been a blast,” said Toby Gregory, “and it’s not every day you get to say you’re preparing for the Arctic in a desert ski resort!” Talk about mixing it up.

This frosty endeavour isn’t just about breaking records, though they’ll be the first three-person team to row the Arctic and Orlagh will make history as the first woman to do so.

It’s also a shoutout for environmental sustainability and battling plastic pollution, all in partnership with the UN Environment Programme Clean Seas initiative.

A snowy send-off with a purpose

While most people visit Ski Dubai for some family fun or to escape the desert heat, our daring trio used it to gear up for one of the coldest and most remote challenges on Earth.

And they did it with a purpose: raising awareness about the importance of protecting our oceans.

“We’re incredibly grateful to everyone who has supported the Arctic Challenge,” Toby shared. “Ski Dubai has been an amazing place to simulate the Arctic conditions.”

Ready to row and rock the Arctic

Next week, these snow warriors will trade in their skis for oars and take on the icy expanse of the Arctic Ocean in their boat, Ocean Guardian.

“Together, we can dare to dream and make a meaningful difference for future generations!” Toby declared, his breath visible in the chilly Ski Dubai air. It’s an inspiring mission wrapped in an incredible adventure.

So, as they embark on their Arctic journey, we wish the Arabian Ocean Rowing Team smooth seas, strong arms, and plenty of layers!

They’ve shown that with determination, a bit of creativity, and perhaps a dash of snow in the desert, anything is possible. Safe travels, team!
