The blue supermoon will be visible in Dubai next week and we’ve rounded up the best spots to watch it from
Missed the Perseids meteor shower earlier this week? Fret not, you have the chance to catch a once in a ‘blue supermoon’!
On Monday, 19 August, a blue supermoon is predicted to grace the sky. A supermoon occurs when the moon is closest to Earth in its elliptical orbit, making it look larger and brighter than usual.
There’s a slight difference between the blue supermoons though! The first is a seasonal blue moon which describes the third full moon in a season which has four full moons in total.
The second, and rarer monthly blue moon is when two full moons occur in a single month, and alleged to be where the popular phrase ‘once in a blue moon’ comes from.

While the supermoon isn’t actually going to look blue, it’s still a gorgeous glowy sight you definitely don’t want to miss! So we’ve rounded up all the best spots across the UAE where you can catch the best views of the blue supermoon.
ALL THE BEST SPOTS TO WATCH THE BLUE SUPERMOON
Roxy Cinemas, City Walk
It’s a special lunar event, so naturally, Dubai Astronomy Group is hosting a special event for those curious about a blue supermoon. A Q&A session, observation of the supermoon and even a screening of the recent Hollywood film Fly Me to the Moon are included. Don’t miss out!
Al Qudra Lakes
A forever favourite, Al Qudra Lakes is perfect for a moongazing session even during summers. With no light pollution and barbeque set ups allowed in certain spots, it’s the ultimate spot to camp and view the blue supermoon. Or you could get takeout from the Last Exit!
Hatta
Another popular spot for stargazers, Hatta especially further into the Hajar mountains offers some truly great vibes and unparalleled views of the sky. It’s a little further out of the emirate, but makes for a great drive.
Al Quaa Milky Way Spot
A quiet and open spot around 90 minutes from Abu Dhabi towards Al Ain, this spot favours a 4×4. But if you make it, you’re promised a mesmerising view of the sky, lunar events notwithstanding.
If the summers are just too much for you to brave though, there’s another winter meteor shower to watch out for! Mark your calendar for Saturday, 14 December, when the Geminids will light up the night sky. Known for its bright and colourful meteors, the Geminids is a spectacular celestial show that’s worth waiting for.
Happy stargazing!
