Dubai adds seventh lane to Sheikh Zayed Road in Dubai

Sheikh zayed road expansion

Commuters heading from Abu Dhabi to Umm Al Sheif can now breathe easier

If you drive into Dubai from Abu Dhabi, this one’s for you.

The Roads and Transport Authority (RTA) just wrapped up a smart little project on Sheikh Zayed Road, and it’s all about giving you back some of that precious commute time.

A new seventh lane has been added over a 700-metre stretch heading toward the Umm Al Sheif exit; aka one of those spots that turns into a slow-moving parking lot during evening rush hour.

With this update, the highway’s capacity jumps by 16 per cent, letting up to 14,000 vehicles an hour cruise through instead of crawl.

If you’re thinking “finally,” you’re not alone.

This stretch of SZR is no small deal; it’s one of the most travelled roads in the city, cutting through key districts like DIFC, Downtown Dubai, and buzzing past icons like Burj Khalifa and Dubai Mall.

Add in all the hotels, banks, offices, and residences, and it’s basically the city’s main artery.

The upgrade focuses on making the merge near Umm Al Sheif smoother and safer, reducing those annoying choke points and hopefully putting an end to some of the daily tailbacks.

So next time you’re heading home and wondering why traffic’s just a little bit better, now you know who to thank.
