The firing of Dubai’s Ramadan cannons is a timeless tradition and cultural celebration
As the holy month of Ramadan unfolds, the city of Dubai becomes a vibrant celebration of faith, family and community.
At the heart of this celebration is the iftar, the evening meal where fasting is broken. Across the city, Dubai’s many hotels, restaurants, and homes serve up exquisite spreads for iftar, offering everything from traditional Arabic delicacies to gourmet international dishes.
But amidst this culinary abundance, there’s another beloved ritual that marks the end of each day of fasting: the iconic Ramadan cannons.
A tradition rooted in history
The practice of firing Ramadan cannons dates back to the 1960s in the UAE and is deeply embedded in the country’s cultural and religious heritage.
The loud sound, which can be heard up to 10 kilometres away, marks the exact moment for iftar – the evening meal to break the fast.
