If you live in Dubai, you could soon be naming roads in the city as part of a new mechanism

Always wished a road could be called something simpler? If you live in Dubai, you could well be responsible for naming them!

As part of a new mechanism by the Dubai Road Naming Committee, Dubai residents could soon be able to suggest names for internal roads and avenues in the emirate.

The methodology aims to highlight the identity, cultural legacy and aspirations of the emirate, in addition to the distinguishing features of certain localities.

The initial phase relies on a combination of names and numbers to identify internal streets to make access easier for motorists and visitors.

The first phase of the initiative saw roads in Al Khawaneej 2 area being named. The new street names were inspired by local trees and flowers, such as Al Ghaf Street, named after one of the most popular species of trees found locally.

Likewise, other streets in the area were named Al Sidr, Basil, Al Faggy, Al Samr and Al Shreesh.

Steps to accept proposals from community members for new road names will be rolled out soon, so watch this space for updates!
