Could the UAE be in for a Second Long Weekend? Here’s What to Know

Islamic New Year confirmed, Prophet Muhammad’s (PBUH) Birthday could mean another Friday off

If you’re living in the UAE and love a good long weekend (who doesn’t?), you might want to mark your calendar for Friday, 5 September.

That’s the tentative date for Prophet Muhammad’s Birthday (PBUH), and if confirmed, it could bring us another well-timed long weekend.

The UAE government has officially confirmed this Friday, 27 June as a public holiday for Islamic New Year (1 Muharram 1447).

That means a long weekend is already locked in for this weekend; a welcome break as summer temperatures rise.

Will we get another long weekend in September?

The next Islamic public holiday on the UAE calendar is the birthday of Prophet Muhammad (PBUH), expected to fall on Friday, 5 September.

While the date depends on the moon sighting, early astronomical predictions suggest it will indeed land on a Friday; potentially gifting residents with another long weekend.

If confirmed, this will be the second long weekend in just over two months; and a perfect opportunity to plan a staycation, short getaway, or simply enjoy some downtime with family.

Why Islamic holidays depend on moon sighting

As with all Islamic holidays, the exact date of Mawlid al-Nabi (Prophet Muhammad’s birthday) is based on the Hijri lunar calendar.

Official confirmation typically comes from UAE authorities a few days in advance, following the sighting of the new moon.

This year, astronomical forecasts are aligning favourably with the Gregorian calendar, suggesting a Friday public holiday is highly likely ; hough we’ll have to wait for final confirmation.

If the holiday does fall on Friday, it could mean:

A three-day weekend for many residents (Friday–Sunday)

A chance for domestic tourism boosts, with hotel and resort deals likely

Time to explore family-friendly activities or simply relax

More holidays to come later in the year, including Commemoration Day and National Day in early December.
