The holy month begins as the crescent moon is sighted, marking 1 March as the first day
The UAE Moon-sighting committee has officially confirmed that Ramadan 2025 will begin on Saturday 1 March, following the sighting of the Hilal moon on the evening of Friday 28 February.
This announcement signals the beginning of the holy month of fasting, during which Muslims across the UAE and worldwide will observe daily fasts from dawn until sunset.
The month will last for 30 days, culminating in the celebration of Eid al-Fitr.
A month of fasting and reflection
Throughout Ramadan, the faithful will fast from Suhoor (pre-dawn meal) until Iftar (evening meal), refraining from food, drink, and other physical needs during daylight hours.
The spiritual significance of this period is marked by increased prayer, acts of charity, and community gatherings.
Eid al-Fitr and Public Holiday Announcement
With Ramadan confirmed to begin on 1 March, Eid al-Fitr is expected to fall on Monday 31 March. This means most residents can look forward to a long weekend as public holidays are typically granted to mark the occasion.
Reduced Working Hours During Ramadan
The start of Ramadan also brings changes to working hours across the UAE:
- Public Sector: Federal ministries and government employees will work from 9 am to 2:30pm (Monday – Thursday) and 9 am to 12 pm on Fridays.
- Private Sector: Employees in the private sector will have their working hours reduced by two hours daily, regardless of their faith or fasting status, as per UAE Labour Law.
