In the eyes of our present, we hear Palestine

Until 14 April

In the eyes of our present, we hear Palestine foregrounds the unyielding creativity of artists who have dedicated their practice to informing, advocating and educating about the history of the occupation, the current political situation and issues of human rights in Palestine.

This special exhibition, presented in consideration of the ongoing tragedy in Gaza, is part of the Foundation’s continuous support for Palestine and its people and testifies to the decades-long struggle for homeland and sovereignty in Palestine.

Henok Melkamzer: Telsem Symbols and Imagery

Until 16 June

Drawing from astrology, religion and spirituality, the Ethiopian art form of telsem interweaves symbols, drawings and texts imbued with spiritual and philosophical significance. Shaped throughout the ages by the sociopolitical and cultural histories of Ethiopia, telsem—with its ancient inspirations and modern idioms—is used to address critical problems in the contemporary world such as climate disasters, war and poverty.

The Casablanca Art School: Platforms and Patterns for a Postcolonial Avant-Garde (1962–1987)

Until 16 June

In the exhilaration following Moroccan independence in 1956, staff and students at the Casablanca Art School (CAS) fomented an artistic revolution. They integrated abstract art with African and Amazigh traditions, taking inspiration from the region’s rugs, jewellery, calligraphy and painted ceilings. Declaring a new art for Morocco grown from Afro-Amazigh heritage, they created a cultural uprising that spread into the future.

Lala Rukh: In the Round

Until 16 June

Lala Rukh: In the Round, the first major international survey of work by Lala Rukh, reflects on three decades of her drawing, printmaking, photography and video, produced against the backdrop of political turmoil and feminist movements in Pakistan. The artist’s poetic compositions depict horizons, lunar movements, bodies of water, coastlines and archaeological sites, capturing a gradient of rhythms through her pared-down vocabulary of lines, cyphers and blackness.

Drawing Time: Duets

4 May to 4 August

The first instalment in a four-part series, this exhibition spotlights new and historical works from the Sharjah Art Foundation Collection that present the expanded range and possibilities of drawing as a practice.

Beginning with explorations of colour, texture, and material, Drawing Time expands to consider the purpose of line, movement, performance and gesture across multiple forms of media.
