UAE dominates in air transport infrastructure and services, setting global benchmarks in civil aviation
The UAE has firmly established itself as a global leader in civil aviation, excelling in various competitiveness indicators.
According to the World Economic Forum’s Travel & Tourism Development Index 2024, the UAE ranks 1st worldwide for “Quality of Air Transport Infrastructure” and 3rd globally for “Efficiency of Air Transport Services” and “Available Airline Seat Kilometres – millions/week.”

In the Middle East and North Africa region, the UAE holds the top spot for “Number of Operating Airlines” and “Air Transport Agreements.”
Additionally, the Global Competitiveness Report 2023 by the International Institute for Management Development recognizes the UAE as the global leader in “Quality of Air Transport.”

Abdullah bin Touq Al Marri, UAE Minister of Economy and Chairman of the General Civil Aviation Authority (GCAA), emphasised the importance of these achievements.
“The civil aviation sector is a fundamental pillar of our national economy. Our success affirms the quality and effectiveness of our government plans, focusing on continuous investment and reinforcing our leadership in key development areas.”
Highlighting the collective effort behind these accomplishments, he added, “Every stakeholder in the UAE’s civil aviation community played a part in these achievements. It inspires us to push boundaries and embrace emerging technologies to further develop air transport infrastructure and services, setting new benchmarks for the industry worldwide.”
Saif Mohammed Al Suwaidi, Director-General of GCAA, shared his pride in this milestone. He noted, “This achievement reflects the efforts made by the GCAA in collaboration with its strategic partners in federal and local government entities, national carriers, and all companies and institutions operating in the sector.”
The UAE’s top rankings in civil aviation indicators underscore its commitment to maintaining excellence in air transport infrastructure and services.

Etihad Airways: Environmental Airline winner
Closer to home, here in the capital, the UAE’s national carrier Etihad Airways recently scooped the Environmental Airline of the Year, having done so for the third year in a row.
AirlineRatings.com has officially crowned the UAE’s flagship carrier as the greenest airline for the third time in a row, ranking eighth in the rating agency’s Top Twenty airlines.
Etihad Airways Sustainability Report is a benchmark for the industry and demonstrates the potential advancements for sustainable aviation through a wide range of initiatives.
