Currently leading operations at Al Habtoor City, Alice Calin oversees the Silk Spa, seven swimming pools, fitness centres, and a children’s playground to name a few things.
Since relocating to Dubai in 2013, Alice has embraced the emirate’s vibrant multicultural environment, which has shaped her personal and professional growth. Like most who move to town, she shares all that she loves about life in the fast-paced emirate.
Tell us a little bit about yourself
My name is Alice Calin and I am a results-oriented Complex Spa and Recreation Manager with over 12 years of extensive experience in luxury hospitality, specialising in spa and wellness management.
In my current position as Complex Spa and Recreation Manager at Al Habtoor City, I oversee the full operational scope of Silk Spa within Al Habtoor Palace, which features six treatment rooms, two Hammams, steam rooms, a sauna, jacuzzi, tropical showers, and private Jacuzzis in an exclusive couple’s setting. I also manage all seven swimming pools at Hilton, V Hotel and Al Habtoor Palace, three state-of-the-art fitness centres, and an impressive indoor playground in the Kids Club area, complete with a children’s pool and a delightful splash pad.
I lead our team to deliver an exceptional customer experience, overseeing daily operations, and managing facilities, equipment, budgets, and staff, all while fostering a serene atmosphere for our guests. Additionally, I collaborate with various partners to provide unique offerings such as baby swimming classes, aqua bump sessions, EMS training, and other engaging activities, including our internal kids’ birthday packages and gym memberships, with even more plans on the horizon.
Can you describe your journey to Dubai and what motivated your move?
I relocated to Dubai in 2013, driven by a desire to travel and immerse myself in diverse cultures since my final year of university. My academic journey led me to Portugal, followed by a rewarding work experience in Greece. Along the way, I participated in Youth in Action initiatives across Poland, Greece, Italy, and Turkey.
A pivotal moment occurred when I accompanied two friends to an interview at Hilton Bucharest, where the Emaar Hospitality Group was conducting interviews. The recruiter took an interest in me, resulting in an unexpected invitation for an interview. Years later, I find it quite ironic that I now work for Hilton at Al Habtoor City, which includes Al Habtoor Palace, V Hotel and Hilton.
How has living in Dubai influenced your sense of belonging and community?
Living in Dubai has contributed significantly to my personal and professional growth, providing me with the opportunity to establish my own family here. What I appreciate most about Dubai is its endless opportunities for advancement and connection.
Could you share about someone in Dubai who has made a meaningful impact on your life?
I would have to say my husband, who is not only a remarkable man but also incredibly disciplined and hardworking in his profession as a hotelier. I feel fortunate to share our wonderful daughter, who was born here in Dubai just ten months ago, which has brought even greater meaning to our lives. Additionally, I cherish the enduring friendships I have cultivated during my journey in Dubai, which have enriched my experiences here.
What is your favourite aspect of the emirate, and why?
One of my favourite aspects of Dubai is its vibrant multicultural environment, which allows people to experience a fusion of cultures from around the globe. The culinary diversity is outstanding, and one can encounter a variety of languages and traditions. Importantly, the emirate hosts numerous festivals, enabling residents to celebrate significant cultural and religious occasions such as Ramadan, Christmas, Easter, and Holi all within this inclusive setting.
What myth about Dubai would you like to dispel?
I often hear various myths about Dubai, particularly from first-time visitors. A common misconception is that women are treated unfairly. In contrast, I would argue that Dubai is one of the safest places for women at any time of day or night. There are dedicated queues for women and special provisions such as designated cabins for ladies and children on the metro, as well as reserved seating in hospitals. I could confidently say that, as a woman, I feel privileged to live here compared to other countries.
Can you share a memorable moment that highlights the warmth and hospitality of the Dubai community?
Working in the hospitality industry has allowed me to experience the genuine warmth of the Dubai community daily. I consistently encounter individuals who go above and beyond to meet needs and offer assistance, showcasing the remarkable spirit of hospitality that defines this remarkable city.
