Dubai Moon Sighting

The sighting of the Ramadan crescent moon will determine the start of the holy month in the UAE

Authorities in the United Arab Emirates have called on residents to observe the sky for the crescent moon on the evening of Friday 28 February.

The sighting will play a crucial role in determining the official beginning of Ramadan, a sacred and spiritually significant time in the Islamic calendar.

The UAE Council for Fatwa has requested people across Dubai and other emirates to look for the Ramadan crescent.

Once confirmed by the moon sighting committee, the ninth month of the Hijri calendar will officially commence, marking the beginning of fasting, prayers, and community togetherness.

The Islamic calendar follows lunar cycles, meaning each month begins with the sighting of the crescent moon.

Unlike the solar-based Gregorian calendar, the Hijri calendar’s months can vary in length, lasting either 29 or 30 days.

Should the crescent remain unseen on 28 February, Ramadan is expected to commence on 2 March instead.

To aid in confirming the sighting, the Ramadan Crescent Moon Sighting Committee has encouraged residents to report their observations by calling 027774647 or submitting details online.

Those providing reports will need to share their full name, location, Emirates ID, mobile number, and any additional relevant notes regarding the sighting.

This call for moon sighting aligns with a series of official updates from UAE government agencies regarding Ramadan arrangements.

Authorities have already announced adjusted working hours for both private and public sectors.

Dubai has followed suit by confirming flexible work arrangements, updated public transport schedules, and revised paid parking hours during the holy month.

Additionally, UAE public schools will implement distance learning throughout Ramadan.

Ramadan is a time of spiritual reflection, unity, and devotion, bringing families and communities together in observance.

The official confirmation of the crescent moon sighting is a highly anticipated event each year, and residents are encouraged to participate in this important tradition, ensuring the timely announcement of Ramadan 2025.
