Designed to provide better neck support, improve sleep and make travel more comfortable

If you’ve ever woken up on a long-haul flight with a stiff neck after your head flopped from side to side, Emirates thinks it has found the solution.

The Dubai-based airline has unveiled the U-Dream Headrest, a world-first innovation designed to give Economy Class passengers better support while they sleep.

Already being installed across the Emirates fleet, the new headrest is aimed at making long journeys noticeably more comfortable without passengers needing to pack a bulky travel pillow.

The U-Dream headrest will feature on all Emirates Airbus A350 aircraft and will gradually roll out across most Airbus A380s and Boeing 777s as part of the airline’s ongoing cabin upgrades. It will also come fitted as standard on all 270 Boeing 777X aircraft that Emirates has on order.

Developed with Safran Seats as part of the airline’s latest Z400 Economy seat, the leather headrest features flexible side wings that fold in to gently support your head and neck while you sleep.

It can also move up and down and tilt, allowing passengers of different heights to find a more comfortable position.

The result is less strain on your neck and fewer awkward moments of waking up leaning into the aisle or the passenger beside you.

According to Emirates President Sir Tim Clark, the airline wanted to improve one of the biggest pain points for Economy travellers.

“Emirates never rests on its laurels when it comes to customer experience and we have found a way to significantly improve the comfort for Economy Class passengers, especially those travelling long-haul,” he said.

“The U-Dream changes the game if the person wants to sleep – by supporting the neck in full. No more neck pillows needed. It’s another innovation that shows our commitment to customers and cements our Economy Class as the best.”

The headrest has also been independently tested to meet European Union Aviation Safety Agency (EASA) standards, while the leather surface is designed to be easily cleaned after every flight.

Three Emirates A350 aircraft are already flying with the new headrests installed, with the rest of the A350 fleet due to receive them by the end of the year. Installation on retrofitted A380s and Boeing 777s will begin from 2027.

The launch is part of Emirates’ wider push to enhance the Economy Class experience.

Passengers can already expect widebody aircraft on every route, spacious cabins, generous legroom, personal entertainment screens and access to ice, the airline’s award-winning inflight entertainment system, which now offers more than 6,500 channels of movies, TV shows, music, podcasts and live sport.

The airline is also introducing Starlink internet across its fleet, giving passengers faster onboard Wi-Fi for streaming, browsing and staying connected throughout their journey.

On the food front, Emirates continues to serve complimentary multi-course meals and drinks in Economy, while families benefit from children’s meals, activity packs, toys and baby essentials to make travelling with little ones that bit easier.

While premium cabins often grab the headlines, this latest investment shows Emirates is putting plenty of focus on the experience at the back of the aircraft too.

For the millions of passengers who fly Economy every year, a better night’s sleep at 40,000 feet could be one of the airline’s most welcome upgrades yet.
