UAE enacts massive law reforms

New measures come into effect next January.

The largest reforms in the history of the UAE have been approved by His Highness Sheikh Khalifa bin Zayed Al Nayhan, President of the UAE.

Meant to maximise social stability, security and ensure the rights of both individuals and institutions, more than 40 laws have been amended.

Fully enacted from 2 January 2022, the new amendments aim to develop the legislative structure in various sectors including crime and punishment, online security, fake news, copyright and trade and industry.

In terms of crime and punishment, the new legislation effectively decrimialises consensual relationships outside of wedlock, providing that any child conceived during the relationship is cared for.

The online security laws will see enhanced community protections from online crimes committed through use of networks and information technology platforms, protecting public sector websites and combatting the spread of rumours and ‘fake news’.

New data protection laws constitute will ensure the confidentiality of information and prohibits the processing of personal data without the consent of the owner.

Other law reforms also include digital signatures being given the same weight as a handwritten signature removing the need for a personal presence in order to seal transactions and the establishment of a UAE Data Office to ensure the full protection of personal data.
