5 MINUTES WITH: Ananda Shakespeare, the well-known self professed environmentalist

Ananda Shakespeare

The well-known PR practitioner and self-professed environmentalist has made Dubai her home in recent years

Tell us a little bit of yourself

I’m a former journalist turned PR practitioner, and a lifelong environmentalist and vegan advocate. I’ve founded two environmental charities in the UK, and currently runs two non-profit groups, one for the vegan community and ‘vegan curious’, another for the media community, both based in Dubai, UAE.

I spent several years as head of content for a telecoms firm, before founding PR firm, Shakespeare Communications, which works with clients who are ethical, innovative and sustainable.

How and when did you move here, and what inspired the move?

I moved to Dubai in 2005 to work for an entertainment listings magazine and website. My sister was already living and working in Dubai launching well known media brands. Dubai seemed like an exciting city to move to and further my career.

How has living in Dubai shaped your sense of belonging and community?

Community is something that has always been massively important to me, as an environmentalist. Causes such as saving our precious planet bring people together from all walks of life. Firstly, I was part of a media community when I moved here, we worked hard. Over the years, I’ve been active building the vegan community.

I’m also a cyclist and am part of a female cycling community here. It’s important for everyone to be part of a community and to feel as though they belong. I deeply believe that social inclusion is extremely important and love bringing people together in social and work settings.

Can you tell us about a particular person in Dubai who has had a significant impact on your life and why?

I would like to tell you about my friend Mario, who passed away recently. He loved life, to talk, to exchange ideas with people. He was a good friend to so many people and would help anyone in need at the drop of a hat. He helped me move house, for example. What was also special about Mario was how spiritual and wise he was. His outlook on life was incredible.

He was also authentically himself, dressing to express who he was and not to conform. He was an artist and creator and his positive energy touched and uplifted many people. Mario and I would often have coffee or meet socially and talk about what was happening in our lives. He was a great listener. Mario didn’t have any sort of agenda – we simply enjoyed each other’s company. Mario is the embodiment of what true friendship is.

What is your favourite thing about the emirate and why?

The thing I most love about Dubai is that it sits on the doorstep of the desert. One of the most wonderful things about this city is the nearby nature. But there are so many wonderful things about Dubai, including the fact that it’s always been a vibrant trade hub and continues to be a dynamic place to do business.

A myth about Dubai that you would like to bust

For some that still haven’t visited I think there is a misconception that the city is only for wealthy tourists – actually there is much that can be done here that doesn’t cost the earth: Going to the beach, a walk along the marina, visiting the Al Fahidi historical area, taking an abra across the creek and so much more. Just as you can have any experience in life, you can have the experience you’re seeking in Dubai – you must just do your research to find the places that make you tick.

Could you share a memorable moment when you felt the genuine warmth and hospitality of the Dubai community in your own life?

It’s hard to share only one memorable moment. I loved how the community came together for people during Covid. My late friend, Mario, was active distributing food parcels to those that needed it. Most people that have lived here will tell you about the generosity of someone helping you if you break down on the side of the road or get stuck in the desert sand. Even last week I needed change for a parking meter and someone selflessly gave me change I needed.
