Expo City Dubai, Cop28 Dubai

With the COP28 proceedings finally kicking off tomorrow, here’s all you need to know about the event, how to get there, what to do, and more!

It’s finally that time, with less than 48 hours to go before COP28 in Dubai officially begins.

The Year of Sustainability has actively built up towards the 28th Conference of the Parties, or COP28 as we better know it.

The event will bring together notable leaders, policymakers, and advocates from around the world to address the pressing challenges posed by our changing climate. This particular COP is that much more critical as it presents the first Global Stocktake, where countries will be evaluated on the basis of the Paris Agreement.

From the youth to governments, all eyes are on what’s sure to be two weeks of exhilarating discussions and more. Here’s your ultimate guide to navigating COP28 in Dubai.

What is COP28?

Once small events focused on technical aspects, COPs have now grown into massive discussions with more multi-sectional interactions.

Cop stands for ‘conference of the parties’, where nearly 200 countries that signed up to the UN’s original climate deal in 1992 partake in discussions.

The treaty – the United Nations Framework Convention on Climate Change – came into force in 1994 and aims to prevent dangerous human interference with the world’s climate. Since the first one in Germany, this is the 28th one, a first for Dubai and UAE.

When and where is COP28 in Dubai?

Running from 30 November to 12 December, the COP28 proceedings will take place at Expo City, Dubai.

With over 70,000 projected to attend this is slated to be the most massively attended COP in history.

What is the COP28 schedule?

The Presidency has taken an innovative and inclusive approach to the COP28 thematic program, becoming the first to hold an open consultation on thematic areas and sequencing.

The program highlights themes that have been part of the COP agenda each year, and new, essential topics like health, trade and relief, recovery, and peace.

The thematic days programming incorporates four cross-cutting themes that underpin effective, interconnected delivery: Technology & Innovation, Inclusion, Frontline Communities and Finance.

What COP28 zones can you access?

The COP28 in Dubai is divided into the Blue and Green Zones.

The blue zone is where the major negotiations will held. Additionally, there will be country pavilions, presidency events, and scores of other events. However, this sections is off limits to the public.

The Green Zone is open to the public with free registration. From workshops and talk to interactive displays and more, it’s a great chance to get up close to the major conference. Check out our comprehensive guide to the Green Zone and get involved!

How do I get to the COP28 in Dubai?

It’s important to note that the COP28 Presidency continues to strongly advocate for the use of public transport for those attending the conference.

To make transport to the site at Expo City easier, check out the new metro timings, new bus routes, and new eco-friendly modes of transport as added by Dubai’s Roads and Transport Authority (RTA).

Additionally, the RTA has also announced traffic diversions on the Sheikh Zayed Road in light of the Union Day celebrations coinciding with COP28 in Dubai. Take note and stay ahead of the traffic!
