Motorists be warned! The UAE Union Day celebrations and COP28 are going to lead to some adjustments on Sheikh Zayed Road

The upcoming long weekend for UAE Union Day coinciding with the start of COP28 means motorists can expect some massive traffic jams in Dubai.

However, the Roads and Transport Authority (RTA) is getting well ahead of the game, with a planned traffic diversion to be set in place along Dubai’s Sheikh Zayed Road.

The traffic diversions will go on from 7am to 11am for three days, parallel to the COP28 proceedings and the UAE’s Union Day celebrations.

With the Abu Dhabi-bound stretch of the highway most likely to be affected, the diversions from 1-3 December will extend from the Trade Centre Roundabout to the Expo Intersection.

To avoid massive jams and staying on the roads for two hours or more, the RTA has recommended the use of alternative routes such as Sheikh Mohammed bin Zayed Road, Sheikh Zayed bin Hamdan Al Nahyan Road, Emirates Road, Al Khail Road, Jumeirah Road, Al Wasl Road and Al Khail Road.

Of course, in keeping with sustainability, people are advised to use public transportation and make use of the new bus routes and special measures put in place to reach COP28.

Motorists are further advised to follow directional signage and updates on smart screens for temporary traffic diversions and alternative route options.

If you haven’t planned it already, here are some spectacular spots to catch the Union Day fireworks displays. And some brilliant things to do on the long weekend as well!
